@BK Journal 23 March 1973. Huto El Porvenir, Apure, Venezuela. in a cayuco boat & took several shots w. 80mm. lens on 6x9 cm camera, getting to about 15 yds. It had rained here previous night & we thought that the jaguar was drying out. Only saw jaguar one other time, when in boat w. his wife; there was great fuss among birds & jaguar on shore; poor photos. W. is very patient photographer and spends much time in the field; should know much about animals. / Ben had taken us to S. part of ranch. Land flat, fine sandy. Some planted grass but mostly natural. Green grass, widespread dead trees & "mats" of dune moss. Chile, mango oaks (said to be 5 leagues thence), ceiba, sabana, around houses. From us we saw a burrowing owl. Occasional white tailed deer, some 100 yds from brush cover (10 a.m.). Occasionally groups yellow finch es. RB said jaguars formerly numerous but had died out (and moved?) with yellow fever about a year ago. No know of any yellow fever in humans. He said now is low breeding season; seen one pair & few males. We saw bucks with small head antlers. / New house, said to be pardon, about 2000 alt.gts on ranch. / New Plateau, family said to have captured young ocelot recently & freed it. We were to stay at old ranchhouse at Plateau. / We met two dragadores. One a hunter who used to hunt for Cia. Inglesa. Claimed to have shot 34 jaguars and missed 3. Hunted w. dogs. Called jaguar w. yound (toto, etc.). He thought it called faster than so. Only one & many all there, he said. No that thought cubs usually December, 2 maximum. Had cubs in cave or burrow hole, often shallow, or under thick brush. He said kill by biting neck & "nose" from above. Jaguar drags prey, after several hundred yards. / We visited camp of game builders. One man said he said he saw two tigers in area about a week ago. He also showed us old tracks in now-hard mud, probably made December or Jan, he said. None knew of
