F. concolor on lease, and a pair of F. pardalis in 4 x 8' cage.
No breeding of last; or smaller than 5 but tried to copulate at times.
They grunted a lot at night he said. Much growling when we were near.
The tigrina said to be from Brazil. Only spots low on sides were
open & margay - like. He said sometimes fed them 2 whole chickens
each - about 600 gms. each - and they consumed all of it. Hollow
speaks English, alternative of U.S.; enthusiastic, tall, about 40 yrs.
He knows most U.S. zoos & directors. He says their (deal of some ?)
wants to start a research area & may respond well to suggestions.
I suggested est research center, especially for reproduction &
application to wildlife management. To Brucal
22 March 1973. Waited for ride to Brucal. Davin came at 2 p.m., in a Bus.
He took us via Valencia, then toward Barinas, then on to Brucal. Good
paved road all the way. Into Portuguesa, land much settled in small
farms, probably family deciduous forest, now patchy second growth.
After dark, many insects in air. Fairly new bridge over Rio Guaparo. Arrived
at home about 10:30 p.m. Several buildings; comfortable but no luxury.
Administrator, Resident Bieschoff, he's 40 yrs, said Colombian buyers cannot
effect high prices for skins. Often see gps. several Colombians effect traveling.
Within past four weeks, tigrin reported to have killed a calf and a cow-
calf; but we kept rank to S. Cien Agrias, established over 40 spe.;
kill jaguars there & burned much pasture. No intentional burning
on El Paoarin.

23 March 1973. Talled w. Wiedemann (sp.?); prof. photographer. He has been
here about 5 visits, usually about 2 weeks. He said that he took the
well-known photo of jaguar on a log over river in area SE of Pt. Agrias,
where man was - he was perhaps first man jaguar had seen. W. was
