20 March 1973 Caracas, Venezuela
joguarundi & found much rabbit remains (from whom?)
21 March 1973. Wednesday. Waiting for trip to Paragual. Stopped for
lunch. Visited "El Pajar" zoo & director Pedro Trebbau. There are no
pair jaguars, 2 pair ocelots, + a lone margay (he said at Parque del Este a
pair, missing blind?). Quality & history of animals poor for reproduction
none yet (except for one litter at P. del E. - one did survive). / He reminded a
call from Silvio Gonzalez Plaza. Said "invasion de tigre" en el Noreste de
(= Surpeque de Tujimato?)
Caracas Plaza - San Jose de Turmero, Valle de Santa Rosa de CumanĂ¡,
Guarico. Group planning to kill the tiger this Sunday. They have
already killed two (tigers?). / Jan Lindblom-Lindblom, young Swedish movie
photographer was there. He had been filming wildlife in Surinam &
Guyana. We all went out to new site of zoo near El Recreo,
a huge high rise housing project, to photograph pumas. Took 5
with us. Released them along a small stream with thick grass at
sides. The two tanets promptly escaped up a side path & could
not be recaptured. Lindblom took his photos. He said jaguar +
ocelot in Surinam at Browings Park & elsewhere. He had appar-
ently been staying near one tribe (in S. or Guyana). Indian agents
restricted them from hunting jaguar unless animal really decided
to be dangerous to humans. But missionaries had encouraged some
hunt for skins to sell, so Indians now hunting. L. had
argued biblical interpretation concerning wildlife with the
missionaries. L. said conditions for wildlife & studies in Surinam
were very good. He especially recommended Peter Tammesma, Land-
looscheker, to help. / L. to show movies at T. Pedro Trebbau house
on eve 22 - probably too late for us. / We went to home of friend of
Trebbau, - al Protyg, in Prado del Este. / His wife had a F. typing and
