Journal 31 20 March 1973 Caracas, Venezuela come to area when shower in hets Many other birds & mammals abundant too. (Later T. Bohn also recommended it.) This was about 50 mi NE of Bruguol. / Gideon Zidron also recommended area of San Juan de Manapiare, N. Amazonas. Cated priest there, holy foot-ups Can Panquito, especially to Laguna Maguiri area - jaguars, tapirs, etc. G. said one of best wildlife spots in Venezuela. Not far from Yotuje but much better. / He also recommended area S. of Maritech in central W. Bolivia, about 65°40'W, in fasthills. Some Indians there. Cattle a problem to V.; diamond miners to N.W. (miners very destructive to all life, G. said) central Another good cat area near Cataceda, N. Apure, about 60 mi. S.E. of Bruguol; formerly good jaguar hunt area. Carabina region - poor wildlife; miners; infertile zone. / Visited Dr. Hector de Armar, Banco Desarrollo Agropecuario, & friend of R. Páez, jaguar hunter. He referred me to Hermano Brigg (of CIF, Plaza Castellana) for info on recent jaguar + ocelot killing for sale to Colombian buyers in SW Barinas (esp. Culebra area). He also introduced me to Luis River of La Salle Inst. River thought that this conservate de mammiferos, José Manuel Belsaz, had data or sets from some of others. River said he well knew the region of central Sanario S. of 4 Barinas, around 8°40' N. He said rather dry open area except for slight shallow ditch about 5 m. deep, which had brush & a little water. many ocelots. He said ocelots mainly in dry country when some water. He cited several places where saw an ocelot - thought mainly only one. / Later in day visited Dr. F. de Frie in altamira, pleasant quinta & garden; jaguar + ocelot skins, heads nt. goats, etc., more, bears - a former hunter. Born 65 yrs, w. younger wife, both apparently German. His ranch a triangle extending S. of Bruguol, home 1200 m. from airstrip. Not about 20 yrs. - nothing there at that time.
