17 March 1973 Hda. Urana, Venezuela
(cat food discarded)
for about 1/2 mile. Then trod around R bank & went off into thicket.
Along caño it had wandered a great deal, probably searching for
food scraps. It had inited half-dried carcass of a 3ft Iguana,
but perhaps not extant. Once walked in mud to edge of a
pond about 3m. across, as if to drink. Used stride about 18".
Occasionally stepped over log about 1 ft. high. We found no droppings.
We told no one about our find, as the info would bring hunters; the
next tracker, perhaps tomorrow, surely would see that tracks & report them.
Usual grass + mosses along caño. A small green kingfisher.
Black+white sparrow-sized bird on ground, walking. Many Myio-
dryastes. Driver took us back. We stopped at swamp between
San Pablo & Rio Y. - several large black birds with some white
markings standing on ground, perched in snags, or flying - our
driver said it was "areco" (= screamer ?), bill like turkey, crest
on head, most like turkey. At least a dozen in this swamp.
Water surface mostly covered with a light green plant of bowl
shape, each plant about one ft. diam. Hundreds of cattle
ergrets perched or coming in in flocks.
To Caracas
18 March 1973. Sunday. We departed for Puerto Cabello; then went
to Caracas. Smoky air as usual.

19 March 1973. Holiday here. Looked in book stores. Visited La Guaira &
Macuto on coast. Bused Maralfe.

20 March 1973. Went to Madolfi's office. There met Harry Sieber, airline
pilot and former hunter. He knew Venezuela well. Said four jaguars now
in Apure, due hunting because of cattle depredations. He strongly recom-
mended Hato de la Cruz, of Dr. Alfredo Paul, in E. Bermejo about 68°40'W. Around
protected. Fairly open for car travel. Formerly had 2 jaguars in cage; or I would
