Journal 28 16 March 1873. Hda. Ur sana, N. Coast, Venezuela, Feeds w. green heads & tails around yard; took a small ibis with spec. little green. But tails of large green ones in two snapshots. Caught large Ameiva in snapshot, alive, & Chile kept it. Saw other to about 20" long & 2" diameter - as seen in Puerto Rico. / Our guide & transportation failed to show up by midday. Administrator arrived & supposedly arranged trip for tomorrow. / Evening walk to W. about a mile to canal. Saw many parrots - short tailed flying in pairs, long tailed in large groups - at least one smaller parrot but too. Kishodue common; occasional one on back of a Brahmo. At dudly many bats flying low over road near trees & water trough (many quote an invocation after dark) Saw one nighthawk, high up. No rain today. 17 March 1873. Driver arrived 0930 (due at 0700). He took me to San Pablo, there to Rio Yacucuy. Between, one 1/2 mile wide swamp w. canions, grasses, gallinules, egrets, many water birds. Driver said he had taken two capybaras here last week, one 90 kg. Then 6 km down Yacucuy river on dirt road, to where men felling aamate tree & hewing out logs. Trote & ganding made considerable openings. Driver & Manuel conferred then. They mentioned killing of about 8 solvas at Arnes, Copra, and Bonan- za (hedas?) to N. Apparently a 7 and large sub taken there not long ago, within 4 months, by another hunter - he took skulls with him, the men said. Manuel said when he hunted on one of these ranches, they paid him 20 B's a day for a week, + 400 B's for killing the jaguar. He current said skin worth about 200 B's. But also told of offer of 500 B's for killing cub & 1500 for jaguars in same area. He would like to hunt there, if I could stay a few days, but needed ammo. He said killed jag- uars at night up to 40 m. with flashlight & his lightweight rusty 16ga. single. Both men said a bigger jaguar taken off to W.
