Journal 15 March 1973. Heda. Urama, Varacy, Venezuela on both sides w. their belenier & palmy much undergrowth, spaced large trees to 30 m. Saw 2 at stream, group of Amazon ? capy, pacote, 10+ red/blue macaws, several guans. Occasional light trota rain. / At outlet on Yacuy, Manuel said he saw tiger & cubs there recently. In streambed, we found jaguar tracks soon, going both ways about a week old. Diameter 7 1/2-9 1/2 cm. stride about 18" Also saw tracks (often) occasional small cat (jaguarundi?) & some apparent felid (5 1/2 cm. dawn.) - some of last fresh, in living human feces muddy. Saw a herd w/o monkeys. No fresh droppings but an old dropping about 3 cm diam possibly racoon; appears jaguar dropping at piece, middle each bed. / We continued downstream about 2 hrs. Manuel said no new tiger tracks, but saw some at certain place much further on - rain grew heavier, such bad mudskin, so we returned to road getting fairly soaked. / Being back then for Pablo, man there said he saw tracks & and 2 cubs a week ago - not cared somewhere to N. We plants go to different place tomorrow. Rain stopped about sunset. / Manuel said tiger sometimes goes over 10km. Down to different area; later look again. These streambeds would seem to make for elongated home ranges along them. / Manuel had lived in this region about 30 yrs. He said many fewer cats & gave lessons of cutting and reduction of forest. / Rainless calm evening; many birds evident in yard. Few swans at lights. One large gecko under cover near light. 16 March 1973. High sunset, slow hills, calm. A small hayscope (reinita - or seen in Pto.
