14 March 1973 Nr. Urarí, Venezuela
Light drizzle after dark. On walk home under ever-increasing, saw 3
large (150mm) geckos spread 10yds. apart. Fewer northern other
spec. insects, mod. cool. Later caught one large under cover, two small (60+ mm)
3 geckos.
creptle but only a few inches up. Saw another, mod. length on outer leaf of air
plant in tree over termite nest. Mosquitoes in house both times; holes in screens.
15 March 1973. Foggy sunset; ground wet from sprinkler in night. Our
guide, agricultor & hunter Manuel Calero, turned up about 1100. He spoke good
Spanish & was small insignificant man about 55 yrs. He said he'd hunted tigre
using bows or bait. Occasionally for mud still traps (w/teeth). Hunt white
by walking at night w. light. Said no primer here - but has jaguar &
another cat, apparently jaguarundis. Ocelots more common than tigre -
often 2 together. Once killed two adult male tigres same place,
at interval one week. Recent tigre taken were about 90 kgs. Cat deer,
coypulong, peccary, agouti, turtle, fish - everything except shrews. Of cattle,
take mostly calves. Attacks flock of birds rarely. Drag prey, often over
100 m; later return to feed. Caracaras taken peccary, deer, bird, smaller
prey than tigre. We drove W. to San Pedro (about 6 km; small settlement),
then turned L. & went 8 km to bridge over Rio Yaroquía (20 m wide,
faulty flowing fast), then went on road down river for 6 km. & dusk
darkened. Walked about ¼ mile away from river on dirt road, then
parallel to river in drier up bed of a branch. This about 20 yds.
wide, sand and mud, occasional small stagnant pools. Some
pools had several fish on bottom; some banks showing - slugs;
called guayabos; about 12" long. Saw two dead coatis, skull
broken. Occasional empty shotgun shells. Many footprints -
apparently people came to hunt, fish, play. Occasional tangles
of downed trees across stream bed, & very muddy spots. Forest
