25 Journal 14 March 1973 To Urana, Carabobo, Venezuela. with Paul Schwetz to Maraca. Thence to Valencia through dry country resembling SW Nevada, especially on several small foothills (Costa, Ning). Humid atmosphere, bare short grass (brown) hills. Valencia bustling and many modern stores & buildings; looked prosperous. Shared Manera; he had gone to Urana. We went to Sta. Cecilia. Hills near road covered with brush about 5 m tall, about 1/3 dry, mixed with cactus - possibly good for scute. Stream near coast & some hilltops in fog had trees. Near Sta. Cecilia, mesquite fairly mostly grown. St. C. had store, big shops, but few modern buildings. / We departed 12:15 and went W. to Moran and thence Urana. Hills to S. forested, trees to 30m. in valleys, except for lower parts, and dominantly green. / at Urana found Manera and CGH (= Carlos Galavis # ?) about 70yrs. They invited us in his old home at river end of tiny town. / Then we looked at prize bulls in corral & stable. One recently grand champion (of ?) at Houston. Home had dozens of certificates & trophies for cattle, primarily Hereford, Brahma, & such types. Apparently Galavis family dated on breeding bulls. / Manera arranged for tiger hunter to guide us tomorrow; the man who had killed several in last few years because killed cattle. Two males taken recently were < 100 kgs. Manera said that in another ranch a tiger had killed (formerly) about 12 cattle in succession. / He said usually hunt by dragging partly eaten carcass to good spot for shooting us. Light at night, also a pipe scare trap sometimes used. We thought puma present but apparently fine & not dangerous to cattle. Found about 12,000 ha. He said that many locals hunt in the Dana Paula area adjacent to ranch; now no protection there. / Near Urana town we saw several long (30 cm) tree lizards, largely green color ground + trees on bank.
