CBK 24 Journal 12 March 1973 Rancho Grande, Aragua, Venezuela Doña Paula in Yaracuy soon and hoped for panda faunal reserve in S. central (8 sept 1971) Guaras soon, in savannahs. He said infested jaguar recently, essien near Churuguara, S. central Falcon. Said much clearing in Barima forest with forest, for agriculture, but their forest preserves there and doubtless tiger still. / He said Colombia undetected traps in Venezuela. / Mitkes 13 March 1973. Tues. Osvaldo arrives from Univ. Los Andes, Merida. He said reports on SE foothills of Sierra Los Angeles (Merida range). Jaguar in swamps of SW of Lake Maracaibo (x bad drainage). W. globe, much cattle & population. Oil east of lake. Sierra Los Angeles much cut- over but still forest areas; all humid forest. Said probably tiger in Selva de San Camilo, far W. Apure. / Also talked w. Paul Schwartz - for he had not been in field since last May. // Went to Maracay to phone to Marcera; he had gone to Caracas! More delay. Back to Rancho Grande. Remained foggy in area. / Cleared cat skins. F. concolor, 31 July 1969, measured 1220-410-190-65, wt. 20 kg. (Chupaderos, Bolivia). / The only F. tigrina, 24 Feb. 1972 (Rio Negro, just a little Chicharran), ♀ 790-305- [?cur.?] 115-45, 2 kg; coat rather fluffy - spots similar to widii but more hair slightly posteriorly; some open spaces lighter color within; tail rings incomplete. / A large F. widii ♂, 955-410-40-53. Same weight about 3 kgs. / F. pardalis, one ♂ 12.8 kg.; 1150-385-160-55; t. 34x25; 16 Jan. 1969; Rio Grande, Bolivia. Most weight about 9 kgs. / F. pardalis ♂, 17 Mar. 1968, 13.5 kg.; t. 33x29; 1220-410 tail; Col. Cejides. / Maddoff was mistaken about black F. tigrina being here. / Foggy & drizzly all day. We walked trade up- slope from lab. Saw 2 titi monkeys (Aotus??) together. Heard Alouatta in distance to S. Took a new - needed sample on tail; red black bird neck & red tail (orange red) twitted in various seeds. One good alarm call at least as anything big hanging next. spec. more
