11 March 1973.
N. Pl. Guarapo, Venezuela
calle tully our ruin. Near house we saw 5 at malaya, said to be "moss"
in tree; pale white tails curled down, drawn on back but mostly
black. One juv. dropped lightly 15' to another branch. These in green
forest in bottom of river, where trees 60'. Humid & hot. River clear, fish 6" long
in schools, scales & fins on back indistinct much larger present. Stream about
20 yds. across, flowing well. (Lawn Taguaza to be damned soon). About
3 km. before ruin, passed small stream + saw one new kitten by stream
in shade; it flew 50-70 yds. upstream; further downstream flew up into
tree & perched 25' above ground. At one point a green snake on road,
frequent
greasy of body (2 ft.) went & still; then it rushed off road probably 6" or
more in length. Good forest vegetation along this road & probably good for
animal surveys, though obvious entry for hunters. Yesterday
midday, from office area, we saw a large kite w. wide swallow
tail; all white below w. black tips wings read gray above; it flew
high above forest, fairly fast. A large swift came down at it
and the kite descended fast. / Drove on to Caracas. Much area
covered by marquis about 15' tall on dry flatish rolling ground;
cacti there? Hills much burned near the outskirts, but patches of
trees in pockets & dunes showed potential if not burned.

12 March 1973. Visited Madalfo in office. He made some calls
for me. Finally got invitation from Dr. Angel Marcos (Valencia 88-615)
(of Cades Galavis)
to visit Urana ranch. Apparently jaguars had killed several
cattle there recently and they had killed two jaguars. We packed
and departed for Maracay and thence to Rancho Grande,
biological station. Arrived late afternoon. Light rain in
Maracay. / Medina returned in evening & we talked. He said
(of accomplishment)
there is presence in NE Bolivia, Altopl. de Naria, far distant, but
