22 Journal 10 March 1973 N.P. Guatope, Miranda, New zuela Colorado (Fila La Inymana to N). Then SE and down to Rio Santa Cruz, at point about 2 km. W of Fila El Castillo, near S. centre of park. / 8 guarda-parque, located around perimeter. Montaneros from Arguello, also Santa Teresa; little from S. (Altagracia), Cecilio (+ another man) thought tigres in steep forested area NE of Riddi Pedro, in many fruit trees. The other Cecilio said pecaries especially fond of graves. Another probably good area in St. Central section of park. Mainly 4 drainages in park, Lagartijo's most important. Asked about sloths, the third man said many. They + related dead lots of remanigues from road. They said where many cecropia (guano) trees. I suggested there may be 10 tigres in park; they thought more. ] Escalona said they would like to gether biological info but needed an official directive explaining what to do. Probably record + mapping of sightings + sign jaguars would be good start. / Highest point in park about 1400m, to SE of office a caser Matanza - Javonico line. || Mardelphi thought that magpie at least formerly common at Rancha Grande; often seen on road before so much traveled. // About 3 p.m. we walked up trail near office to old blocks + rocks. No new droppings found. One mammal (aguti) scuttled away on ground. Two guano in trees. Ground packed hard, leaf-covered. / Sunday 11 March 1973. Morning fog above our dwell but cleared about 8 a.m. Cloud chocolate clouds from edges forest; continued at twice to midday. (We again walked the local trail to old orange orchard. Near highway level high doglike bark + rush of animal in forest; bloody, long feet - probably a jaguar or a large yaguarondi. Muggy + still. Little bird activity + no monkey heard. Normal droppings. We departed about noon w. pickup (driver Olibio) and went N. a few km. past Macarita, then through locked gate to mud road which descended through forest for 1½ km. to upper Rio Tagua, where there were guards (not park) house +
