9 March 1973 Nat'l Park Guatopo, Venezuela
cut in a "rocuro" tree 3' diam. with straight hole, which had milky
latex which tasted like thin cream; he made 1" hole in bark & the
milk started to bubble down trailer, slightly sticky. Said a good
drink. Only about 3 old slashes on tree. / At one point picked up
a possum skull, probably Didelphis, but we saw no other animal
remains. A few deer tracks. Four trees in bloom, but many
fallen fruits & seeds (green foods?). Last part of trail about
Rio Santa Cruz a mile, descending, to a clear stream about 15' wide. Chis
cut quite a bit here. Said cursed for about 6 years. We
saw almost pair of guans, searched about 200' away quickly -
seemed to indicate little disturbance. Bloody blue face, red
gular patch. Small fish (4") + crawfish (3" across) in stream. Said to
be old trail complete nearby. / With brief stops for water, lunch, it
took us 5 1/2 hrs. to reach end of trail. Start time about 1330
& moved faster, so saw little. Back at starting point about 1730.
Chis had found a small geyser on rock at side clear stream; it
ran across water about a foot. Let us put it in sink of water it
could indeed go across top, but mostly not breaking surface
spec. tension, likely perhaps acting as float. We also picked up frog leg
from trail in hard forest; cream colored 1mm. line tips more to tail; pointed
Kote: nose. / Day morning, dried strips gave - We all picked up numbers
of tiny ticks, especially around ankles & belt. / Chis said there
were sloths here (one kind) but we saw none. Fair numbers
of bats seen in evening near buildings. The pineapine dropping
also had apparent snake scales; saved sample - and 2 nematodes.
10 March 1973, Saturday. Talked w/ Escalona & looked at map. Walk yet:
day started about 1 km. before Macanillares station. Went w. to File El
