C Koefod 20 Journal 4 March 1973 N.P. Gestopo, Miranda, Venezuela Echo. in green tree tops - Clio said "macaro" (Sanguito, frutis (big w. white across forehead) = ?, and macaco (= Cebu apella n nigri - mittatus?) recognized by him. Often saw armadillo diggings. Ground covered w. leaves; yellow clay beneath. Occasionally hard timone. Many medium-sized trees, some larger to 4' diameter. Probably had been cut in far past. After about 2 hrs, still on ridge, intersected old trail. They said it was formerly a cart trail from Santa Teresa to San Antonio; now grown over. This point pro- bably 100' below summit level. We turned to S, & went along sidewalk, made a less level trail, for perhaps an hour. They said surprised at lack mammal signs - blamed it on settler invasion - said more near office area because of protection, old fruit orchards, many poses and other small mammals. We found an apparent jaguar deposit, droppings similar to yesterday but about 3 cm diam. Two pieces, damp grey muddy color. Contains claws, small spines (of porcupine?). I saw part. Open large insect in center of trail + ground cleared for about 10" there, leaves & sticks pushed aside so by pawing, earth packed and no clear scratch or apparent urine (same yesterday). No odor kept at a few inches. We dropped into a small clean rocky creek bed, much moss, ferns, water rock plants. Then on, passing other creeks, & eventually reached an old trail composition at a clear stream. We had found a seen about 8 gums (big black) in trees along the way. Clio saw possible speceay (barquiro). All fair humid forest but not dripping & many small tree. Many vines, some thick & woody, others stringy. Clio
