C Koford 19 Journal 8 March 1973. N.Pk. Guatopo, Venezuela Lothos used for bugs. [illegible] inside this park mainly for water shed protection map showed hundreds of former settled sites; now few or none occupied in most sections. Drain into Lagartitos other dams. Spec. (gecko?) Took lizard w. orange venters under sheet old sheet rain on slope away from orange tree. Inside said many maybe when oranges ripe, Nov-Dec. Many possums when mangos falling, July. / We saw no good topein trail. Heard howler maybe in distance to NW, inside (Jose Elias Alvarz) said 3 kinds monkeys; sargento, frutino, & mocos (?). (He did not recognize my description of more or less a marimonda?) / Summit about 1 km. beyond office. Then descends after a few km., first dry, many orange-flowered bushes on S. slope. Outside park, slopes grassy, brown, especially trebled, burned patches, some still smoking. A great contrast to green forested slopes in park. / Near office, 7 macaws flew over about 6:15 p.m. I flushed a quail (tortolita?) from old plantain plot. / In cave, took a tree-climbing frog in house after near outside light; escaped the type. Nati'l Park Guatopo, Monday Venez. 9 March 1973. Near office, many little chickadees about 6 a.m. Fog at dawn. Clear sky. / Previous night, ½ hr. looking from roof no caprimulgids, bells, revealed no eyeshine mammals or birds, no luminous insects. Fair variety of moths at household lights, but no great beetles (said mostly at start rains, may). | Off on hike up main trail in park, w. Escobar & guadalouque Elias Alvarez. started (0800) at point about 12 km. toward Macanilla + walked W. upslope (~ Rio El Colorado) in forest. No plantings or clearings. Narrow trail. Heard aloueta about a mile S. at 0830, much howling. also saw part of troop of smaller red-brown monkeys scattered
