18 Journal 8 March 1973. Coatopo M.P., NE Venezuela growth. Some burned spots, & said much entry by livestock, wood- cutters, fire setters, some hunting, in this part. a single jaguar spotted in lower area. later up to more humid forest zone. Stopped at guard station at Las Macanillas & talked with worker Simon Guerrero, former hunter. He said usually hunt by waiting. Traps not used. 2 yrs. ago on trail to S. of his station, he met a jaguar about 2 m. away, he said. Luis O. said that in 1967, Northbound men stationed at Las Macanillas had dogs. Jaguar killed 3. They got hunter who put out young goat & killed jaguar, said to be 155 Kg. Simon said ocelot eat mostly tinamous & other birds. Escobar said that last year about 4 pm one day a jaguar crossed close in front of his car, bistro. Las Macanillas office / Another jag. killed upper Coatopo. Tapo de Agua Fria in 1971, as annoying family there. Apparently no skull crabs kept in either one. | looked off area. One dog belly by highway. Smelt horse on road. Good view down forest canyon to NE. Bus (Carrera -> Altoporte via Sta Teresa) passed by office on highway. We saw macaws, oropendola, tanagers, and several large long-billed green-backed todies near office | Took walk up local moss edge trail to "fundo" abandoned about 10 yrs. (old mango, coffee, banana trees, mango trees). 30 min from office found jaguar droppings in trail. Two large white pieces, one 8 cm. x 3-4 cm., + two larger globes of mostly pure hair w. a few bone fragments mixed (and some). Our guide said dope (= rare) hair. Collected same. Many path trails in this area, humid second growth + abandoned farms on mod. slope; was guide said jaguar go everywhere, not a quiet or fixed trail. a handful of green skeleton on guard partly eaten and again a skull cleaned up, said by Jose. | Many long views over forested fairly steep slopes from office area.
