Carnival holidays today tomorrow; most scientists people out of town now. 6 March 1973. Tuesday, Still carnival holiday. We visited zoo at Parque del Este. Pair ocelots in large cage; when water truck came to spray, one climbed 15' up wire & along dog ledge to remote corner - used white to climb rather than digits + claws; about 3"x6" mesh of ¼" bars. Cat skunk. / No jaguar. But a pair of Otters in wet open pool. Birds included Cox whistling - long descending whistle - and bellbird calling repeatedly. Swallow, swallow-tail, duck, tucans, a mocking jay. Adult & juv. Sarcoramphus in cage. / Later went to zoo in Parque "El Peñon" in Paraiso area. Much larger collection mammals in smaller area. Two jaguars sleeping one cage. Pair ocelots. Single margay. / 2 Sarcoramphus. Many Tropical birds. Some exotic birds & mammals too. Two capybaras, 2 Tapirs. Spider monkeys & island of C. nigricollis. Sensitibris, macaus, several Barbarys. Jaguarundi - gray in color; vernacular name given as "gato montes o onza". / Found Nat. Science Museum closed. Pleasant temperature morning, hot afternoon. / Mandolff said Orinoco delta to E. of Tucupita underdeveloped swampy; reports jaguars. Riparo said drought in area causing movement of cattle to S.
