C Koford Journal 14 1 March 1973 Villavicencio, Meta, Colombia Early 1950's, truck road to Ibagué, mule to S. J. de Arma - all forested then. An air strip for DC 3 at Macarena sta. (approx. Vista- Bermosa). / He reported tale of 8 day jaguar hunt in Laoma Cueva in 1957. They called jaguars out of clay & sometimes zanzaruelo. Few saw and many fresh tracks but got none. Later other (Lee Bros.? ) came with trained dogs & got many. / He thought tourist left. Hunt in lower Magdalena was about 1963-66 & was shrouded in life mag. Captives released & shot. El S. of Cartagena, Golfo de Morrosquillo, the jaguar on medina wall. Had killed bears & several large "civetas" went up tree. Shot. Dry area w. cattle & 1950's. / 1954, alpacatari in Macarena saw jaguars. Apparently was rich forest area. 2 March 1973. Had had rain shower last night; first for long time. / We found that truck had left 0400. So waited further w. Melao. Then took bus to Bogotá, the trip. Steep slopes across canyon still forested for first hour, later cleared, burned, eroded. / We went to Jardines Lab. Talked w. Bob Cooper. Clemberg had not arrived. Went to residence of Dick Reed, near lake. Shot slower in Bogotá about 3 p.m. - first in weeks. / At residence, met Stewart Boyter, who had been in Colombia about 2 yrs. working with Mathews-Dornis, Indians of N.de Santander, on Río del Sucreto. Their hunted pecarí, agouti, tapirs, w. bow & arrow (guns rare). Really killed cats, & sold any skins. He said mostly uninhabited forest. But heavy clearing in N.W. corner of N.de S. Bruce Olson, missionary, had been encouraging Indians to die and cultivate over last 11 yrs. Also clearing in NE corner of N.de S. Mostly little immediate danger exploitation N. of Casanare-Tolima road. Boyter hopes to go to D.C. Berkeley (Anthropology). / Visited Jorge Hernandez at home 3 March (Cra.19, Calle. 39, # 18-14). He recently returned from trip to Washington D.C. to a Plenipotentiary Conf. to conclude an International Convention on trade in
