29 Feb. 1973.
Tuparro, Nucheda, Colombia.
grew shells when walked w. us. Saw no medium game but little grass.
Big fish available in arroyos & said good fishing. Departed 7 p.m. in the
dark, a super-jeep truck. Rough riding & rough drive, Lopez. We saw one w-t deer
in open, growing broad acacia, 200 m. from river. About an hour back to start
of big black granite outcroppings. Brief rain shower. Arrived Tapir camp about
9 p.m. Short stop. Bushlaw in dark.
1 March 1973. Arrived Quista about 0515. Then turned over to guard 3 boys &
shotguns (16 ga. single) found hunting in Tuparro reserve. Then drove on to W.
Arroyos rare. Grass mostly coarse Andropogon, much of it burnt. Small
huts with some water; usually none. No cover at all for 90° a mile of
garden in many areas; remnant sprouts between even after over 3 miles.
Seemed driven to W. Saw no wildlife on road except occasional ibis or heron.
(On Rio Meta)
Arrived one fair sized town about 1130, Puerto Lopez 2 hrs. farther. Rio Meta
about 100 m. wide, slow flowing, clear wooded banks when first mentioned.
Near Puerto Lopez, rice companies and tilled land. About 10 km. to W.,
paste of various introduced grasses - pangola, colvial, grama, etc. appear
with trying to improve grazing. Drive here then farther E; smoky, hot,
humid, but near Villavicencio, arrived about 1600 24 hrs. from Tapir camp.
In arroyos, with no long stops. Much shelter use by rough side. I saw
wrote Dr. Medar. He said knew 2 men in Llanos Orqueta, rubber dealer, who
had turned into skin dealers; sell ammo, game. Indians now hunt for
leather instead of for food. FM was stationed in S. de Morona in early
1950's. Many white-lipped peccaries; in April-May, migrated through
a savanna there - sometimes over 300 seen at once. Could hear roar
at long distance. One trip near highest peak, saw troop big jaguar
which followed them (4 hunters). FM said actually saw only about
6 jaguars in life. In Colombia since 1950 (university in Rome).
