C Koford 12 Journal 27 February 1973. Final Terr. "El Tuparro," Vichada Colombia volcanic rock boulders & outcrops. These continued to Orenoco. Saw several caprimulgids on road in dark, and one or two frogs. Arrived at Tuparro camp + had usual rice, beans, potatoes, peanuts in water. Apparently guards + several families here - at least 6 small children at once. Some 4" long grasshoppers came to lights. A gen- erator runs lights in several people's houses + elsewhere (but no water in pipes tho modern plumbing). Some few bats run lights. Read + saw no wild animals in camp area. Warm still raining. 29 February 1973. Early morning, bird apparent almost in far distance to S. Macaws, parrots, doves, woodpeckers, falk-tailed flycatchers, active in trees near houses. Still muggy morning. The boys gave us a big Hercules beetle (cocoid). Many black biting flies afterwards. We drove about 5 km. to edge of forest & saw at least 3 med. sized black monkeys going thru the trees (Colobus mirim ?). Saw tracks of cati(?) smelled pecary (?). Fair winds, insects + birds. Outside of wooded strips, passages in thick grass, or of large net-sized mammals on solids. We walked up slope of black solid granite about 500 ft. to crest, where we saw Orenoco River about V-mile distant. Forest clear, but wide sandy beaches on Venezuela side (photo). Found several lizards on rocks (coll. one for station). Found at least 3 small holes beneath boulders, 1-3' off ground, another in 3' high shallow cave (coll., Amblyrhina; left for lab.). Not windless; flies biting + bothersome. / Returned to Tuparro lodge. Crawling to leave via Pto. CarreƱo about 3 p.m. We lay dreaming for Tabun, Villavicencio, about 4 p.m. Hopefully in V. by tomorrow late afternoon. / Orenoco about 200 m or more wide; slow current. Said rapids up + down stream.
