Roford 11 Journal 27 February 1973: found Territory "El Tigre" Veragua, Colombia thick broad stalk ( ) said to have been burned early Dec. (3 mos ago). Space between galleries often 2-3 miles, but galleries dense & to 100' tall, some fire-killed trees at edges. Occasional butternut bombs, but essentially (J.E. photo) no animals burned are. Once a white-tailed deer standing under chuparros and durn when new green grass (the P.C. boys say deer migrate after burnt new grass). Out to area of mounds about 1 m. high & wide, spaced 3-4 m., appar- ently made by large earth worm castings. Brazos said areas between flooded but taper nearly (photo). Mounds of hard clay, + road made in their area very rough. Some burned off some grass covers. I stopped at site of Crisóstomo hole angling in for about 8', about 10" diameter. A juv. J.E. photo Dureya (these) came out and stood about 5 yds. from car. Another shale burrow, 16" diam., 100 yds. farther on. P.C. boys say they saw them a week ago. Wells clearly dug w. huge claws. I stopped to minitize gallery about 75 km. out. Area perhaps 2 miles long, 0 to 200 yds. wide. A clear cano about 5 yds. wide & 10' deep in spots meandered thru it. Area of "camp tree," previously visited by P.C. boys. They said saw band of Abuta there; we went to give stand and found apparent bandit tracks (very elongated foot + phalanges) in mud by stream. / Several kinds of fish visible in cano slow-moving water. Blue & red macaws, parrots, other birds. But we saw no signs of pecarries, agoutis, anteaters, other first floor mammals. Dried leaves covered ground. Dense vegetation, dense, tall, many small palms, but little undergrowth except occasional small burrow (armadillo?). Walking outside gallery where chuparros & other scrub, saw small grey-backed woodpecker, once a clean owl. Much of outside ground strewn with erosion pavement of river gravel, & saw few low hills of similar igneous rocks. I We pushed on to W. about 3½ hrs., came on start of huge block
