26 Feb. 1973 Faunal Preserve "El Tuparro," Colombia.
found tracks tapir, many aguiliana (+ dropping), lives of cat
or Puma;
tracks. Cat judged large adults, for one set about 9 cm wide, widely
spaced, 7½ wide (= hind foot ?). Tracks near bushy, but also river
edge of fine sand bar. Max distance betw. tracks usually 1 ft,
occas. 2 ft. & few track coats (?). Spoonbill feather on shore.
Many small carin tracks & saw one about 4' long. / We
returned to track. Few birds along river - many less than near
Macarena. I anubis, first blue herons. / Band grassland
area had occasional bettongie barks over on ground.
Caracara. Oscar. Sky 1/10 cumulus; warm & dry. / We did
all last nets + morning but dropped in afternoon. / Area visited
today not rich in birds. Probably 2 cats' tracks represented. /
About 8:30 p.m., Uming from Villavicencio arrived w/ supplies. Wind rose
in evening. Clear sky. Plans to Orinoco tomorrow, 3½ hrs. to E.
27 Feb. 1973, Tuesday. Early morning, 2 turkey vultures atop tree near
station. Pair large parrots flew over, calling. Pair of blue & red macaws flew
over gallery forest. / Fair set weather instruments at station. Did mostly
rice, beans, pasta, soup. I did kinds of small fish swimming good
in cisterns. Cile took a few to about 8" long w/ back & fins. Boye said
had seen Jacare in Rio Torro; often in Rio Orinoco. Joe wrote from
Milwaukee, Schmiedel had been here up. Photographs to make a
documentary movie recently. N. went in morning as before. / I saw
several bats over looting pool (10yds. across) last eve. / About 10am,
we started east in jeep for "Tuparro" main bldgs. near Rio Orinoco.
Rough dirt road. Nearly all grassland burned at first. About 175 km
by road to destination, a 3½ hrs. continuous travel. Stopped about 50
km out where green shoot grew (Artemisia and a reed are
