Koford 9 Journal 25 Feb. 1973. Nr. Tuparro, Vichada, Colombia with large tail (carrying grass). Occasional Butio-like hawk. Waited for Uruu truck w. Induna supplies; did not come, as donut ed gasoline to finish trip. Thumbac rolling country with Perhaps 10-20% in forest. Large galleries some several km. long. Most had "caño" of water in interior; clear water moving w. small fish. Some different Tabebuia (pink flowers) and jacaranda (purplish) flowers! About 9 p.m., saw 3 solitons on road; one Pterogym fox, jecus, said sapromygid on ground. Crossed log bridge to the western status of Tuparro reserve. About 10 people there. One thatched house for cooking & sleeping. Clear caño about 6 m. wide w. swimming hole (many fish). Fire still going all around horizon, said locally by Induana. Most grass burned and short. Local man said jaguar tracks reported near Puerto Quemado. Other place trader reported near cave was 1 1/2 hrs. up Rio Tuparro from the Orinoco. In spite fire, stars clearly visible. 26 February 1973. Monday, about 10 a.m. departed in Uruu for Rio Torno, about 14 km. All through burned grassland. Low patchy gallery forest a mile apart. Trees recently burned. Big rodent mounds, 2-3' high, irregularly spaced. Much ground covered w. earthen tubes, apparently worm castings, 3-4" high. Near river, area of hundreds of termite mts. to 2' high (photo). Narrow band then 10-15m. tall on S. side river - river about 100 m. wide, muddy, slow current. We put outboard boat in water went downstream about 1/2 hr. Saw 2 yellow - cocked ibis, 2 kingfishers, a few glossy ibis, few other birds. Arrived at sand bar about 300 m. long & 70 wide on N. side. Around least (?) terns flying over. We looked for tucans.
