23 Feb. 1973 Nr. S. Juan de Urana, Meta, Colombia
to SW of Rio meta (come via Turbo, funy, rio atrois), moto./Don
Nunes said much rice, cotton, sorghum, corn now planted in
area along river. - Vieta known road, some by log companies.
Probably will expand. / We drove toward Villavicencio. Had on 3
flat tires. Arrived after dark. Melan said he did not know of
steel traps in Villavicencio markets. / We met 2 guys, cape
days, & Gonzalo (boss of Tupango project), and others who will take
us to Tupango in Jeep + Churipa tomorrow morning.
24 Feb. 1973. No rain. Overcast in smoke. Dry. Melan said it was
first real dry season in 4 years. Waited for Bogotá go. Various
delays. Walked around town. Saw large steel traps of European origin in
one hardware store. Some pineapples & oranges for sale, but little fruit in
Sat. general. Finally got jeep to leave in evening, about 9 p.m. We rode 6
in Jeep - Longley, 2 P.C. men, Chile, Eversley, me. Rough road but
dry & passable. About 2 hrs. to Puente Lopez, small town. Then on
all night through flat country w. few trees visible in night.
25 February 1973. Stopped at sheltered house for big breakfast. Grass
greenish, old grass dry & hard. We saw many fires at night,
one in day. No galleries after over 1 km long, about 20 m.
tall, some more. Below cattle some zones. Occasional sylvilagus
on the road tracks. One tamandua concession on road. We stopped at one
“restaurant” where there were about 10 peccary skulls, 1 howler, 1 tapir. Another
had several sets whitetailed deer antlers, all small. One had skin of
large tapirs. / We walked in one gallery. Trees to about 100',
mostly in green foliage. Four large red-headed woodpeckers at least
six military macaws in tall open trees & flying. In open
fields and fences, black & white flycatchers v. White, also one
