Koford 6 Journal 21 Feb. 1973 S. of Villavicencio, Colombia. with 18 yr. old Don Jr., running ranch. 1715, arrived Vista Hermosa. Outlier of Sierra Macarena dimly visible through smoky air. Many openings cropped coarse grass. Town said to have about 2400 people, region several thousand. Calm, smoky. Walked in patch front. A few lots in country have large tree. Big aguacate Chachalaca calls. Caprimulgus near head singing. Toward frog calls. An Indica who asked w. about 4 men (Jefe = Alfredo Castillo (?)). At night saw squirrel sized mammal jump in brush = ratite? Dry. 22 Feb. 1973. Drove about 21 km. on good dirt road to Pimienta, small town at end line w. Indema station (1 hour), by Rio Chuspa. Arrive about 0845. River flowing, smooth, many sandy beaches. Went down stream in Cagaro about 20' long w. outboard motor to Guiani, about 1 1/4 hrs. Shore lost much forest but many chirimoya, laurel trees. Saw many birds: parrots, cormorants, anhingas, herons, shore- birds (called gavistas), large tern w. broad white dress & wing, small tern, glossy ibises, blue heron, big & small kingfishers, 1 osprey. Occas. trees to 100' +. Overgrown clearings. Birds (thorn- stone like), swallows, toucans. At Guiani feet & tail of large (Cusmii) Critter was dead a few days; hunter said they ate it. (Leuklein, (anthropologist) studied atlas in area 1968-69, ex-mission from Villavicencio. / We hiked in great wide trail then clearing to the Colonia (Indema building) for 4 hrs. Few mammals but herons, parrots, other birds. Many roads. Several clearings in stages of man cut, to burned out, to planted in bananas. Cotinga, ant bird, tinamous calls. Reached colonia about 1345. House 30' sq. in construction. Patrolman said saw collared peccaries, then tigre, in area last night. Had seen many tigre tracks along "trocha" thru woods. Saw many "pajuel" trees
