Kofod Journal (Felid Survey) 19 February 1973 Bogota, Colombia told me of recent Indians scandal - a plane load of cat hides and skins confiscated by customs at air port, there being illegally shipped w/ approval of some customs officials. Allegedly some had been put into India for this illegal purpose & another person said twice or many hides counted or declared. Need more info on this incident. / J. Hennessey said prohib- iton effect crude hides initially good for conservation, but thought eventually would result in more pressure to hunt cats. He said big Bogota tanneries have not yet started to tan cats - may start within a month. Cooper said very good tannery - Manizales? JH said agreement w. Brazil in Dec, 1972 that Colombia would no longer accept hides from Brazil (unless traders raised). Need agreement w. Peru also & Venezuela. No thinks skins coming from Panama, Darien on Pacific side to coast of Choco, thence by rail. He & others said few new steel traps (t. de cepo) used in Colombia. For jaguar, drag monkey carcass around & hang it up to attract - later, put bait and wait. Tigills hunted mostly w. shotgun at night. Rodricio, field man of Lab, says sometimes use pits for tigris or deadfall. Cut shotgun shell case to make single slug. / Erwin Bernstein (& Carpenter go. from Florida?) recently had groups for about 6 weeks in Bolivia, W. of Norori, on monkey census project. A jaguar had been shot by a local at Colorado - considered rare event by locals. young An ocelot seen once. Probably ocelot skin offered for sale at 50p. ($250). Much clearing by hand for rice fields. They were at S. end of clearing & settling zone, just N. of Serrania de San Lucas [this range still primitive they said,
