(Felid Survey)
19 February 1973 Bogota, Colombia
told me of recent Indians scandal - a plane load of cat hides and skins
confiscated by customs at air port, there being illegally shipped w/
approval of some customs officials. Allegedly some had been put into India
for this illegal purpose & another person said twice or many hides counted
or declared. Need more info on this incident. / J. Hennessey said prohib-
iton effect crude hides initially good for conservation, but thought
eventually would result in more pressure to hunt cats. He
said big Bogota tanneries have not yet started to tan cats - may
start within a month. Cooper said very good tannery - Manizales?
JH said agreement w. Brazil in Dec, 1972 that Colombia
would no longer accept hides from Brazil (unless traders
raised). Need agreement w. Peru also & Venezuela. No thinks
skins coming from Panama, Darien on Pacific side to coast
of Choco, thence by rail. He & others said few new
steel traps (t. de cepo) used in Colombia. For jaguar, drag
monkey carcass around & hang it up to attract - later,
put bait and wait. Tigills hunted mostly w. shotgun at
night. Rodricio, field man of Lab, says sometimes use
pits for tigris or deadfall. Cut shotgun shell case to make
single slug. / Erwin Bernstein (& Carpenter go. from Florida?)
recently had groups for about 6 weeks in Bolivia, W.
of Norori, on monkey census project. A jaguar had been shot
by a local at Colorado - considered rare event by locals.
