Colombia-Venezuela trip, Fel'd survey.
17 February 1973 Berkeley Calif. -> Colombia.
Departed home 4 p.m. for San Francisco airport. Took United flight
to Los Angeles. Walked over to America and departed 2030 for
Colombia. accompanied by son Chik, 17'1/2 yrs. Plane stopped 1 hr.
at Mexico City about midnight. Good view extensive city lights.
18 February 1973. Arrived Bogota about 8 a.m. Before landing,
saw smoky infested hills to N. Saw about 3 snow caps. Green
around Bogota. Minimal custom inspection. To Residencia Alemanes.
Later walked to foot Morante & took funicular up. Several fires going in
jungle, smoke haze over valley. Local resident said this is exceptionally
dry year - no rain so far. Walked around city for orientation.
19 Feb. 1973. Calm, clear, smoke haze. Went to Indigena office.
Bogota, Colombia
Talked w. Amilcar Lopez (Marijo, Parque Natio). Then to Laboratorio
de Investigacion de Vida Silvestre, Cra. 19 No. 30-15 (Tel. 32-59-16). There
we found Bob Cooper, several Peace Corps workers from Tuparo and one from

Mocana (=Don Wise, letter, Vestakemora), A.A. # 2082 (Indigena office) in
Villavicencio. Also there was John Oesberg, visiting from Smithsonian
Inst. | We're said 1500-2000 families settled at N. edge of Mocana
reserve, near Vestakemora. Per Banderas had been ruined and
Mocana made a National Park. But much entry & cutting, espec-
ially along rivers. Now Indigena building a "colonia" as head-
quarters, down river & walk 5. from Vesta Kermosa. He said people
claim no cats in that region, but he saw many monkeys.
His job mainly administrative. He thought little understanding of
conservation among Indigena workers in Mocana area. Also that
people there disliked Indigena. He said all of Mocana park was
forested. Could fly to S. end, at "La Mocana," from Villavicencio.
Vestakemora about 5 hrs. by road from Villavicencio. | We're also
