Felis onca
12 October 1971. San Ignacio, Sinaloa, Mexico
diminished around here, but not jaguars. | The Lee Bros
once arranged a trip to Venezuela, bringing their dogs; the
trip paid for by Venezuelen. They killed 31 jaguars
in 29 days, said JFF. One tiger put feet first and charged
Dale. Later, foreign hunters restricted in V., said JFF. Only
surviving brother is Dale, now at Ft. Huachuca, Ariz. | JFF
[actually 2 others also]
had photos sent by Lees of their trip. One shot with about
6 jaguars or pelt's hanging up. Typed note on back of prints
amounts larger than Sinaloa ones. | JFF had many other jags-
man & hunter photos; gave me one showing him & J. Lee with
jaguars. He had no pelta or bones now, however. | JFF
said he had heard of tiger killing cattle in Campanillas
area. At Ajaya village, others said same and one said it
was a ? with two "ethnors". Campanillos about 3/4 way
San Ig. to Ajaya, then off to N. - I didn't go there. | One
person said a woman cazadora in San Juan (to S.
of San Ignecio) sent letters had a cat (wild ?) in cage.
13 October 1971. Again visited Ferreiros. He said
15-19 jaguars per yr. killed in 5 yrs., all in Sinaloa,
some clear to coast. One long story about calling
Est. [Dimas]
jaguar near Dimas; finally getting in sight at
15' but gun not working. Shot with pistol, but
ammunition poor so no kill. Later taken nearby.
Vivace called this animal of timer, "playing" with
him. Apparently rather fearless of men, noise,
lights. JFF unable to estimate total area hunted
