Felis onca 12 October 1971 San Ignacio Sinaloa, Mexico Tigre had been taking calves from corral. Finally tried by dogs & killed. | Largest taken was 90 kilos dressed, est. 110 whole. | Corral one - but dogs in head. Often a dog killed. Cattle - taprid/uter jugular of neck. | One traced by dogs to hole in rocks, or small lodge. Killed with pistol. | JFF returned to San Ignacio about 2 yrs ago (from Guadalajara ?). Had seen near Coyotitan (near highway, W. of San Ignacio) until 1963. One Tigre then flew at least 17 years. Finally killed by man camping, who awhile & shot est w/ pistol. The This cat ranged on Mesa de Cocalto, to S. | Home range about 20 miles, said JFF. Tigre stayed in same area for long time, probably one male, 2-3 ff. | Hunting was usually Nov. - March (when got too hot for dogs). Usual method to call at night, to locate. Then hunt in that area (of call answer) next day with dogs. Sometimes made large circle, trying to pick up fresh tracks. One taken 22 December for Hollander using this method. | Calls - Hunter can distinguish sexes of answering call, apparently. Both sees answer, year around. Young apparently born in any month, w/o season (little evidence). Putting and bait, dead or alive, brought poor success. But often return to own kill, not often it starts to rot. JFF had no information on traps a poisoned carcasses, although others mentioned these methods, not from first hand experience. Food mainly deer - but other things too, even lizards.
