2 August 1972 Buenos Aires
Continued to sell tanned jaguar pelts in windows of fur wholesale stores, tho essentially no official imports.
3 August 1972. Returned to Ladroy's office and got letter of introduction. His assistant (?) said now only 6 people in federal game & envt. dept., including only one inspector. The badly need support thru influence on the Minister of Agriculture & Isconderies. I read Ladroy's proposal for a federal wildlife law. First point was that wildlife now belong to "nacion" under legal code, should be property of the public.
Wants to finance w/lt thru taxes on guns, ammo, & hunting ept., part of casino winnings, other funds. Maybe IUCN could help with plane a support. In 1965, Ladroy had presented at a conven'tin a convenis for all South America for wildlife protection, investigation, cooperation, coordination - but no response. Working & fighting for wildlife w. little support.
Went to Museum & looked at fossil bones of Megatherium, glyptodons, other huge edentates of past. Mylodon hair tuft about 1/sq. ft. looked fairly fresh.
Again met Ximenes, who had suggested to Ara that walk on another species of cat, perhaps jaguar as feasible.
Crespo told me of expansion of Onycotologes in San Juan area of W. Argentina. Also he said foxes hunted hard, as agricultural pest, and now scarce may areas where formerly abundant. Prepared for departure.
4 August 1972. Friday. Flier to Montevidio, up coast first, then up river to W. Our rolling grazing lands, dry, but spots w. many small round ponds. Inland, grass greener - than max cultivator, palm trees in fields, as reached Asuncion.
