Journal 1 August 1972 Buenos Aires eats food in tree, then feeds on ground, as shown by stomach contents. Also climbs eucalyptus tree to feed a small birds, such as parrots. urisii, which reaches S. limit in N. Uruguay, espec. two areas, feeds in tree; more strictly arboreal. No habitat diff. from geoffroyi domain. F.colomb, feeds ground, rarely climbs. Uruguay - many melanistic F.geoffroyi . X.thinks F.g. (= gatus matres) - X. had taller & fogain of measurements F.g., rough tatter of F.pandeli . Was going to São Paulo for long stay, to work on lots. X. said many hunter of lots in Paraguay; much use of steel traps, also sticks traps. X.thinks F.g. now more common in Uruguay than 10-15 yrs. ago, when he first trapped for them. He said some caught in daylight, so not strictly nocturnal. Thinks F.g. can breed twice a year, 3 cubs, so high breeding potential. But difficult to keep & break. Melanism may be increasing - white furrs not desired by public - about 10% of F.g. are melanistic. / X. says many gatus matres costs in lower Montevideo, few of fogain or ocelot. Some officials of govt. want to introduce exotic animals, including leopards, for hunting. Hard to explain difficulties w. exotics (today borders had much pressure to introduce exotics for hunting, tourism ). In Uruguay, why protected species is Arctosybelus, of which regular harvest of about 16 000 per yr. X. energetic & like personal.
