Felis onca 12 October 1971 San Ignacio Sinaloa, Mexico Called on J.F. "Pancho" Ferreira who lived a block north of the parque (house no. 63), 1/2 block E. of Meliot (and Rene). He was principal source info on jaguare in Leopold's Wildlife of Mexico, 1959. He did not remember Leopold but knew of the book. JFF now 77 years old, but very active, 4 bed pleasant house. He is in charge of truck transport for Tayollito mine (gold, silver). Roads to mine open in Dec, then rains, about July, close them. He was part time hunting guide, 5 mos./yr., for 5 years in 1930's. Some of the Lee Bros of Tucson also brought clients a "sports" line. Level fee was $1,000, for a hunt sometimes 10 days a more, including special dogs, riding mules, local hunters and jaguar callers (used a saw horn to call them, or a drum with hole thru which pulled palm-fiber or waxed cord). "Sport" included Mr. Howard of Boston, who took pictures including shadowme moonin; they got 3 jaguare on one trip (JFF has photo). He would be over 80 now. | Another spot was Hollanders, who "got" large one after 10 day hunt. | Heard told some note about Ferreira in some publ. - "American Game"? | Another "spot" was Carpenter, now (?) president of Dupont co. / Total kill was 87 in 5 year period, hunting as far S. as Rosario. | Much talk about an "onza", slimmer, with larger feet than puma; one taken by JFF and Dale Lee near La Billo, prominent formation S. of San Ignacio. / One tigre "hunt" near Los Frailes, prominent peak NW of road or skyline to E., in 1936 by Mr. Howard & his party.
