Mirante Estancia, Mato Grosso, Brazil
activity in swamp dry house. Jp. 5 lemurings, apparent squirrels. Heard Alsatia calls in distance, to SE and to NW. Saw 2 blue macaws flying.
About 1030 departed for retiro's Delinha, far to W. about 2 hrs. in jeep, much or muddy road or thin water or road. Initially though closed forest, later then surrounded with swampy ponds, near a caneta; clumps and lines of mata.
(our woods natives)
Near side, Jp. 5 blue macaws flew. Saw four animals along roads. Vultures, caracaras. Two jabirus lay one pond. Delinha in clearing; palm hut 4 2 families; with me man, Sue & I went to search for onça tracks, leaving about 1:30. He had seen track about 3 days ago. We stopped and looked at shore around pond. For along creek later when many by-stands -
Later,
(plastuceros)
tracks small den, and some clots he said. Then about 4 hrs. alongside for retiro; largely thin 4-5 ' thick grass, scattered burders. Our guide then said needed all day to search. We started similar route on jeep road, 10' wide, too muddy for car. Searched border another pond, 100' across.
Then from here he saw onça tracks on road. There was fine set, an "Patida" animal, for about 100 yds. Tracks came out of grass, went in. Looked nearly as fresh or tracks of dogs with us; probably made last nite. Came out of bunchgrass to road, later back in. Bunches have recent trails between them. Area "Canjas de mercin". Old tracks, guide said was Tamandua (Driscyon)
canidius (Myrmecophaga). Found remains of a delinha (sound skull) - grey hair w black tips. Oldest track: Measured 11 to 12 1/2 cm. wide, between outer edge of 4 toes. Toes, & whole track, nearly circular. Guide thought made grande, larger than seen previously. When asked what ate, he said "gods, gads, mites." Back at retiro, other seemed rather surprised we had found tracks. This area flooded & isolated about half year. Started back about 5 p.m. Again saw jabirus, toucan (toca). After dark, met 4-9-banded armadillo on road. (jeep now run x built one). / At ranch house, about
