c. Koford 51 Journal 17 18 July 1972. Miranda Estancia, Mato Grosso, Brazil. pastoral fazenda. Had walked on Caceres for a year - said many men p. thus, killed perhaps 200 cattle/yr. Adj. fda. of Braschi (Paul Natividade) had English administrator; also many jaguar, esp. in area called Sete Valter. Healthy rem. of Sao Paulo had houses in Tres Bocas area, yet Curico- & Paraguai. / Talked w/ George Ellis. He said that man killed by jaguar at Caceres, about 1 yr. ago (when hunting) - got behind tree, but jog. reached around both sides & grasped. About 3 yrs. ago, neighbor tried to kill 4 w. spears; it went to side toward a woman, & he attacked & wounded jaguar. [?] peccary] Finally shot. But man's scalp torn off from rope forward. Queixada - very dangerous; large bird, 4 centiles beyond edge; jaguar fear & seldom attack - but take many p cariteu. Jaguar eat many caimans - they got one too. Also take one. A fat ema in yard put head into jag. cage, & jog. grabbed head in mouth. Man tried to pull ema body four out, but head came off. Jog. also in dense thicket, higher ground; even may not be tall. One called 44, from size (?) tracks, hunted about 20 times, unsuccessfully. / Jabiru - now building stick nest not far from house. Piseda - rare; found one on road. Blasturus - present, but protected; several sete antler on wall, but mostly found, not killed (one set Oyetocera antler in well). Blasturces - hard but big hunter for kids; can be approached from dammied to 5 meters. In swampy places. Eng - nests now. When late Aug., may see 20 young together; hard to run down. Serania - not associated w. ema; rarely flies, but if pursued in can very fly once. King vulture - have but not many; in rocky area found a large doury young which he thought was this; no color head, had smell in place (perhaps black vulture ?). 18 July Tues. Short walk, 7 a.m. Clear, cool, calm. Much noisy bird
