C. Koford 50 Journal 15 July 1972 Grumba, Mato Grosso, Braz. Apparently prosperous town, perhaps 5,000. About 5 tall modern buildings. On ParaguaĆ­ River - many boats about 50', & some steel hulled about 100', at close at shore. Reple Hyacinth, some over 5 yds. long, going downstream. A line of fishing boats in stream. Some very old Spanish building. Many leather shops, several gun & sport goods shops, but no spotted cat skins or parrot saw. Some had guayaza shells, tamar roads. Only cattle driven seen waterfront. No animal products evident on market (no down, feathers). At skin wild Frits Blume, guarda, painted costume expert (for Cavalcanti, vol 14 -), but he about to trip (can not find him thru University in Campo Grande). Rain late afternoon. Manganese mine said to be about 20 km. distant. A small museum in center city; included jaguar's sport, some snakes (did a pickled), old photos area. 16 July 1972. Sunday. Took 0840 train to Miranda, about 6 hrs. Good rain driven pastured. After cross P. ruin on bridge, then open stands of pure "paratiba" trees, to 20-30'; some in yellow flower .3' native grass under. Done near Tenente Viana's. Then area of cerrado, deciduous forest, or Fogdo. Bodognava. Visited Padre Palentzeiter (2 Americans, Glen Abbott & Ken Knopp) in Miranda. Previous arrived figures of Nova Suza - vi see. 17 July. Monday. Telephoned Miranda. Got. for truck & waited. Came about 3/4 p.m. Recent heavy rain as much water on road. Saw on road: 1 gentis, 1 wood warbler, 1 saetia. A gp of 6 large swan. Sp. 10+ blue macaw, flying. Big like just before how a few water buffalo near it. Lake had corvinans - count? or shoe about 6' long. (March by edge had Thresis thines, duckers, jacanas, g.d. heron, big egret, lapwings, flycatcher (?) all black sps. white head.) Flights over lake to us, late afternoon. Battered gp of rusty hawk (Da brite. Parota, ibises in flooded lines, small flake ducks, egrets. / Ocrea patoda in cage; said 10 yrs. long, & taken sub, a sp. No production young yet. The & over panda wolves hearing sound, north open, large stiff cul, now almost spotted, playful. / Several large land turtle in yard.
