Bought 12 July 1972 issue of Cruzeiro, which included article by Claude Koch on jaguar hunt in Mato Grosso. Various people think refer to Fzda. Caceres- of Joao Borges Neto (Rio & C. Grande). 12 July 1972. Wednesday. Overcast morning. Waited for Miranda Est. pilot, + searched for him. No luck. Writ to residence Fritz Bloema; moved to Corumba. Rainy day. 13 July. Thurs. Pilot, Cogan Franco arrived wr. note; can go to Miranda on Monday. Visited Lido Silva, Syubela - only cattle-rancher-like. Neighbors now working on fazenda. Wildanimal skin trade terminated, prohibited for over a year. Went to Aero Rural, (Aero Rural, Vila M'cDana) to look for Fzda. Caceres- owner, Joao Borges Neto. Found his house, but he had flown off to ranch. Left note + introductory letter for him. Went to secretary of Magnos McKelvie, in Libby, ref'd to Hotel C. Est. Not speaks English or Spanish. About mid 50's, (Sta. Luzia) energetic. Said no commercial hunt on ranch since 1948. All pastoral - not cutting forest. Wet area. Know of only one cow killed by jag during last 2 yrs. Said 60% of cattle of Mato Grosso in Pastoral. Suggested Fzda. Tipote (Aguidana) ceretan, of Toto Bados (Luisa b. on ranch), as source hunting info - they been afternoon. Jago + egg. Left Lido Silva, of old Caceres Bears articles, of this family. Springy. 14 July. Fri. Took 0830 line for Corumba, about 4 hr. trip. Overcast, spiky morning. Good red dirt road. Stopped Aguidana (clean, pound), Miranda. Beyond, mor pade on pastoral. Aow two jaguar by road, many cassowars, oxen. Dendrocygne, curibotes, white egrets, comancus, parrot flower, lemingbirds. Round his longuasi, about 300 m.; no large. Fleeting rifts of hypocantho going down stream. Beyond, flat pastoral w. scattered brush, trees to 50' tall or grasslands. Then more tree, many in pink flower (Talemia?). Up about 200 m. over a line of hills, red rock in parts, covered w. dense-grown forest, mostly leafless, to about 90' tall. Many sq-mile sub-dense forest. Down to lower level. Rumber. Much almost a partly closed forest. Many of the hanging stork nests, often 2 or 3/tree, in spread leafless tree. Stop Corumba. 74
