10 July 1972
Miranda, Mato Grosso, Brazil!
David [illegible] killed more cattle than jaguars. He had lost some jaguar in camps,
or could not follow w. dogs (large Brazilian dogs, like brown great Dane, said
derived from early slave-driving dogs - we saw several). Says jigs. dogs prey
its water first - run fairly long distances, large animals - fish, slops. And-
really move faster further, each day. In about 5 days, ready to feel again!
Thinks produce more than 1 litter /yrs. Because said mammam - can be seen
down with car or at times. One man said news (blatserer) present, but
hunting strictly forbidden (many antlers on walls).|George said his father bought
ranch about 1950, when Searle Daniel was there. They bought all of Daniel's equip-
ment, to stop commercial hunting. Daniel had compound about 50' wide, in
which he photographed jaguars. (George said heard that S. did recently.) One man
said not to believe everything in Daniel books. Jorge said he had killed about 20 (?)
jags. in 20yrs.; last about 2 1/2 yrs. ago, became ranger men habitations. |
George invited me to come in a few days & stay, said that we could probably
see jaguar trapper (go by horse from road). No said some ocelots but seems,
or hunted heavily for pelts - if got outside ranch, taken. Had used box traps
to take ocelot in parts (it did not know skin price.) |Took some
[excellent good]
hopeful photos of skulls in house, w. borrowed flesh. George interested in introduc-
ing exotic game to ranch - zebras, antelope. Jorge said that hunted jaguars could
pick most possible place to turn & attack pursuers. We low thought animals had
defensive home ranges; rare to find two together. |Returned to Miranda. On
mid
ridges about 3' w-de cover of lunch buildings, old nests of Fumarium, with
Passer domesticus on & around (also in ? them).
