9 July 1972. Sunday Fzda. Pedequera, Mato Grosso, Braz.
in loose flock (like Drawings of Mexis ?). One rit, 2 pair of pellet-type wood-
pickers, on 6-8" diam. trunk, 10-20 ft. up. Vermillion flycatcher, and
white (flycatcher ?) same open area. Den trees occasionally, enter small
den run w. white tail bird (lazy hen nozoma ?). In his yard, always had a
young nozoma, done in select about 1" long, very tame, pettable. | About
1:30, departed for Miranda by car with Pedro Clement Kug. He said he saw
pecarier from this main road. Crossed Miranda just on bridge; 50g. south. The
town, about 5000 inhabitants. We stayed at Pedetritico quarter, next to church on
playground. Clon & Claudio (Brazilian padre) said much hunting by local people on
weekends. Claudio said a jaguar reported killed at place about 20 min. away, recent.
day. Remained cold all day.
Miranda, Mato Grosso
10 July 1972. C. Kug took me to Miranda Estancia by jeep; he had driven there
about 1 1/4 hrs. on bit road, though about 15 gts. Passing the river's, more swampy.
Saw a jabiru, swampy parade w. water hyacinths, gojara, tern, sunhija. a
driver run around near road, fleeing spread tails. white bars, seeming to

direct flat of tail later, rest up. Also saw 2 rheas (emaciated rhea said to be
associated after). Candy house, 20+ buildings at center, next to large reservoir.
Main barn luxurious. Living room about 30' long. Several jaguar skin rugs.
Antlers and skulls (gojara) on walls. Own fireplace, a line of gojara shells-
purple 20 a max. another shelf held smaller ones, perhaps some of pure.
A board meeting in progress, so met some officers of company. | In yard, cage
w. 37+4 gojara, another w. parrot & owl. Macaws in yard, flying free. | The
administrator, lounge, apparent run of area. | Is interested in wildlife. said now
prohibited hunting (except pecarier & armadillo ?). Said father had killed many
gojaras, perhaps over 100. He had killed several. He estimated 30-40 run on the
ranch, mostly in the swampy eastern part (300,000 ha. all together). He thought,
home range about 15 km. diam., but depended on food supply & nos. rates.
