Both at Acunajó, in open grasslands, saw several white birds w/ black primaries (flycatchers? - about 1/2 x Vermilion flycatcher size) perched atop shrub & foal, in open. In late afternoon, walked W. to Loko. On grass about 5 yds. from bushes, a Bothrops about 3' long, D-V flattened, & tilted flattened body toward me, curled tail tip at tenes. When disturbed, held front 8" area of body about 3-4" off ground, somewhat colas-like. Took photograph! Ineve, Pete Clement King from Miranda came (America, from N.Jersey). He had been based Miranda 4 months. Earlier, farther S., on Paraguay border (when said smuggling a thriving business). He said Canela-Minda road only about a year old (P.R. is much larger), and that he heard from Miranda hunters that much night hunting for deer along it - one group killed about 500 in one year. C.K. thought much clandestine hunting, little control or enforcement. No specific sentences seen at night along road to Miranda. Rudolfo said forest clearing at rate of about 12,000 ha./yrs. on ranch. Aiming for 100,000 head of cattle (300m ha.) eventually. Alexander had talked w/ Dr. Magro Coelho, head of family, at Faza, Santa Lucia. He had said formerly professional hunter w/ dogs, but now wildlife protected, then hunters put themselves elsewhere.
