Ftza. Balsiquera, Mato Grosso Brazil
in grass among termite mounds; allowed opossum hairbrush to [illegible] then rain, tails
[illegible], to make clouds. Our guide said serrot (Blackbuck?) in area; leather
prized for saddle & shoe leather. Flew back to Presidente Prudente. They
had been working & reporting cattle today. / A visitor from Ftza. Monte
Lucia: Said few jag. there now, but formerly (over 10 yrs) had professional
huntsmen w. dogs; killed over 50 jaguars one year. He said a pilot in Brazil
Jungle hunted much. / Alexandre said army enforced game laws. He reports seeing
violators such as gps. fishermen, from plane. Army men come. A. said he saw
army confiscate load of alligators skins at Corumbá. Later skins were returned
to owner, who claimed he had alligator farm. Much cold/cloud across border in
many items; like animals. A. replied: About a year ago, on plane from Para to Brazil,
set by skin buyer who said he formerly bought huge nos. skins Brazil, but
now could get none and had to send in leader Town of Belém, Pará,
Paraguay (?). A. said, we never prohibit hunting is that attract people who want
to hunt; in 1958 (?) David Lakefuller killed a jaguar in 10 minutes of hunting.

Other hand about it, came to be hunted, the kill was a rare occurrence. (Much

7 July 1972. Nimbus clouds. Heavy rain shower about 0730. Then winds
about 20-30mph, occass. light rain. Rain on and off, & winds, throughout
morning and until about 1500. The clouds higher. Walked to lake to W. saw
track Tapir or ground sloth. Pair of Tuxteira in tree; very agressive. Pair
of Ptilocelphs (Lop-eared) about same area as before, & track also in mud
on road. Cold day. Clearing about sunset.
8 July 1972. Saturday. Alexandre did not return, so our flight over Pantanal
delayed. Walked 6 on dirt road. Near water pool, 50yds. offroad, track of
tapir. Frequent large & small dog tracks, many probably of "fox"
size perhaps of ocelot-sized cat. Cold but cirrus clouds, most
