5 July 1972 Fzdd. Bodequena, Moto Grosso, Brazil
Dust trails about 16" long, 10" wide; thick; red center on hindlegs + tail - on
front flow. Conspicuous. Tracks apparently O (elk-foot). / Broken
open pasture, springing in 1/4 acre fenced area, w. mauri palms, ceasopia, other
trees; wind under had many deer tracks. From this clump flew 6 large
(perhaps - arjoli)
crowns - black, white heads, white patch at breast wing - they flying singly,
about 100 yds. to forest edge. / In front, signs mammal use - trails,
scratches, eaten mauri fruits. / Saw 40+ Crogypor circling high, and
above them were Boreoampleus circling slower. I saw and shot a new
deer, a small deer; ran w. tail down. In pasture, 2 Teictis ibris
(?) (water bird ?)
on ground. Two hawks, w. white bodkin, black wings, circled in distance.
Returned to lodge, 12 30. / Rudolfo said tapirs near Pato Corvo - men
told not to harm them. / Late afternoon, walked 5 on road thru dry
front until after dark. Overcast, muggy. Little bird activity. Returned
in dark w. light. Saw about 4 birds. One capybaru'd on ground,
calling. Other eyeskin - probable small cat, deer. No owls.
6 July 1972 Overcast, calm. Early birds flying 7 a.m. A jaguar track
reported near Acarayol. Plane took us to Bodequena. Walked around:
saw parrots, flock of brown avis, F flock 100+ birds (parrot?) high over
plane, headed for hills. Three old mud nests of Fiernarum in one tree by
house, 18' up, 6-8' apart. / Wind reversed. Plane took us to Acayol. Told
that wind covered area tracks. Capataz, Arguello, said little game (hum of
no area seen). Another man, unguide, thought "mints". / Waiting, took plane to Pucuro.
