c. Koford Journal 4 July 1972 Frida, Bodogweng, Moto Grosso, Brazil Termite mounds: There about 5 yds. apart, to 2 and some 3' high, A-shaped. Many had Burundi (formicidius) dig into top or side. Flat ground. For about 2 hrs. we rood through untroded area, scows thistle, stinking scrub, thick grass - hard going. Then reached ruins of Mutins - 2 wooden bldgs., truck on road. Then on along dirt road for 2 hrs. To train station & ruins at Carandugal (when old train passed late, but out). On way, the men shot a 9-banded armadillo. Once, in early fog, 2 jollier black & brown flew over. In good, four sparin birds (mostly, avir), one against cuckoo. After Mutins, occasional terrier. Found no serpentine dropping or tracks, tho mammal tracks on road. Bent route pan for trucks. We rode about 30 kms. on map, I think. At Carandugal, stuck loading carols. Arrived there. Saw a small snake w. green water. Phone came about 3 p.m. & returned me to bed. quarters. In eve, talked w. Alexende F. about other fogzades w. no water & perhaps joguars. He said Carassó, near the presene, rich in birds, even in fish. He also knew some (?) of Santa Lucia, let's Bis Pigui + São Lourenço - about 500 milhetras - when was water. He said much center to propose rail park in central Pantanal, as cattle & ranches already there. 5 July 1972. Sunshine morning. In & near low Ficus in pasture, flock 40+ long pointed bills; parrotlets - green w. yellow bend wing; tight flock, but sometime spread out in pairs in flight.) About 8 a.m., walked W. toward lake. In first pasture saw 2 snar (as on 1 July). In Congo Rio pasture, beyond lake, this found present 6 in one gp. (at least an other) - same area as always seen before. We went behind hill W. of lake in Tangue pasture. Mod. open in parts; some large from tree. Dry small streambeds. In shady area, pro-penlor, white-breasted jays, red crested woodpecker.
