{ "text": "C.B. Koford\n40\nJornus!\n2 July 1972. Sunday.\nFaz. Bodoguana, Mato Grosso, Brazil.\nMany bird calls about ruminas. Walked 1/2 hr. Ponets, leparings (ps.-Ptilonoryx?).\nOminous shouts. Calm, cool. /We took long walk to SW by lake. Convent:\nArunna (?) - all brown; slightly curved bill. On young hill, 5 chicks - walked\nslowly, 50-100 apart, pecking in grass. Head red - built like U, very\nlean & scanty (few ribs?). Lip - at least 2 smaller than others. /Walked\nto its hide when dry woods. Hanging stick nests: Red + blue macaws - saw\n2 flying close; later, 2 parked. Noisy. Occasional picking up wood. Few\narrived to tree. From green to W., between hills. About 1 p.m., a\ncliff nr. 50' cliffs, broken trees & vegetation. Many small palms. Pair of\nswimmer (?) tanagers in tree. Flocks to 10 of reddish small finches. Osprey. 4\" long grasshopper. /On return trip, after leaving forest, saw small outlandish\ndeer (Mazama?) in thick grass. When 5 ampm in morning, saw 4 - and 2\nserinior (?) near them. All retreated when approached to about 50 yds.\nAssociative similar to ostrich & bustard? Even stay 50-150 apart, not\nbundled in retreat. 1/4 mi. distant, 3 more even one 100 m. from other\n(family gps? tinitrius? home range?). Radcliff said thought young\nin January; all 9 & lay same nest; one 57/6p.; gps only to 4-5;\nsome eggs around nest broken, & young first or fly larvae /R. said\ndoes require 20% off land left as forest, so they leave it in hills.\n3 July 1972. Mon. With Alexander, agronomist, & another, went by plane to Pato's\nBodoguana, via B. Station on R.B. to W. At first fast dry, about 50% of ground\ncovered. Bird-flowered tree (Tolelaria?) in hills. B. retis in circle of garden,\nlevelled about 0400.\nperhaps 5 km. down; about 100 citrus fruit trees there, & a dozen lllygo's\n(lower). Boss, the other administrator, wore pantaloons. Nests of Ferrarinus\nin branches flamboyant tree. Blue-gray tanagers.
