19 October 1971 Mr. San Blas Wayan, Mexico
saw many birds along trail, but very muddy, with
some cattle, pigs, & deer here to make it more un-
comfortable, so gave up. Started well -> Creaco; a trail
steward Progress, thru jungle, often 1 km. Continued patches
of good forest for 5 km, then higher level & more
open (cut over, probably). / Soon got a ride to Tepic.

Stayed at Morales Pension, 2 4z blocks from Central
Camaeros (superior live steam, good restaurants).
Looked over town & market. Clean towns, swept
sidewalks; fairly cool after coast. Clear day.
20 October 1971. Took bus to Los Varos, near
coast, about 2 hrs., as this was locality of one iguana
hill. Patches of subtropical forest, but considerable
cultivation near Los Varos. Sighting of hunters or slavers in
the small town, etc. truckload of blue fruits, jamotes (from
Puerto Vallarta area ?). Returned to Tepic (via Compostela;
attractive small town). / In Tepic at Galerias Xixona
near Alvarado (Bouza Constituyentes) saw 2 shelves of
ocelot, about 120 pesos each, on display. Modest market,
a few Huichol Indians, much of their products.
21 October 1971. Took 7 a.m. bus for Guadalajara,
by local bus about 3 hrs. Near Atotonilco, jumble
of volcanic rock by road; slopes of old volcano to N.,
not spectacular; vegetation tops. Much & gave cultivators
along road, & corn. Some pine-oak mixtures
