C. Koford 37 Journal 27 June 1972. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! Buenos Aires does not have this rare species. Many species of birds, mammals, plants, now listed as having complete protection, no comments. | M. was friendly, talkative. He gave me short introductory letter. Suggested people in Campo Grande who could direct me to others. | He said I must get letter from in order to do Conselho Nac. de Pesquisa, for research in Brazil. 28 June 1972. Went to office of CNP, in Castello area. Directa of the techn.- scientific div., Dr. Moreira, very busy with a meeting. I was denied to write a letter to him, & did. | To Museu Nac. again. Fernandes about. Worked on Cayo Coco & Roca Artiller articles again in library. | Yesterday & today hot! Preparations for Mato Grosso trips. 29 June 1972. Left hotel. To train station. Left gear (except) at Museu. Talked briefly w/ Pierson. Task 1030 live for Campo Grande. Went via S. Paulo, then west all night. (I hrs. time change to w.). 30 June 1972. Arrived Campo Grande 0530. Walked around town. Much farm goods, saddles, leather, but usual wear & same tourist shops. A few modern office buildings, steel stores. Visited Museo "Do Brasil", at a ("Florence Kennedy") preschool school on Dr. Mato Grosso, & 14th July Indian costume, but some mounted birds, 2 jaguar skins. Talked w/ Directa, who suggested a little drive on 3 de Maio. Stayed at Hotel Colombo briefly, to both & rest. Then to budget hotel, Campo Grande, to meet A. Luvino (accountant), Alexander Ferreira (administrator) & others of Fazenda Bodogueranos. All to air- port, where 2 Cessna plane took in to ranch; about 1 hrs. flight. Near C. Grande, grazing lands & some cultivation - soon patches of low largely deciduous forest. Patchy variable range & slopes - increased to W. - saw a few miles across. Many rocks in various directions as well as railroad. Occasional meandering stream or small muddy lake. Then a range of hills w. rock cliffs, broken forest between & below them.
