Journal 27 June 1972. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Broken up by searching for jaguar. Ocelote said harder to see than jaguar. One night killed about 30 chickens in pen; next nite, broke in again and repeated (Rio Dos area). In Rio Dos - Bolivia area, not hunt jaguar with dogs (catherson), but formerly used large dogs traps, with salinite sewed inside, as figued in C. Denton book. Spent 15 yrs. in C.C. Auto. May get info near Linkara - Estacao Experimental de Ocaua, or at Refugio Agor- Cacau tania. Man "Manuel Morais" used to be in area, but much. I thought at Ilha perhaps still jaguar in Baraonal. Aguirre collected 20 and 2 jaguar on Nio- anta Setania in same area, virtually breeding arena (probably kept; spess. in fauna museum). Again think jaguar eats mostly deer, pecary, feral pigs - probably not smaller mammals such as (5.08) porcupine. Aguirre knew S. Scenel who had place near Ocaua. One American woman came to hunt; in one nite got no jaguar. This possibly before perhaps 70 yrs. 1960. Aguirre a small lean man, apparently tried to tell about the harness. Would be useful field companion. He said that skin jaguar and ocelot brought high price, to 1500 c. for jaguar. In afternoon, visited Dr. Alceo Magnanini of IB Desenvolvimento Florestal, 2040 Lakes Lato, up slope behind Jardin Botanico. This is federal forest & park dept. He told me of recently formed preserve, 70,000 ha., near lat. 18° where Rio Paragua Iate Bolivian border. They propose a future Nat'l Park in pantanal north of Aquidabana, but he thinks little chance of getting it - too much pressure to use the land for agriculture. He also indicated 5 modest prospective parks more in Amazonia. He said all commercial & amateur hunting of spotted cats prohibited. The old park professional stock of pelts supposed to be stamped. But many taken to Bolivia, worked or Bolivian, & exported, including to Brazil. Often hide cat skins between other to smuggle. Golden marmosets - about 20 turned up in England, confiscated - returned to country of origin; = Belgium - thus said to have come from
