To Petropolis, Brazil.
We changed hotels. Then took bus to Petropoli, about 70 min., mostly thru wooded hills, to about 2000' elev. Summer rest of Dr. Ledett, now King of Brazil. Visited F. Pires and family there. Returned to his.
26 June 1972. Went to Museu early. Fernando delayed. Looked over old Casa e Pesca revistas, w. hunting stories including some about onca pintada in Mato Grosso. Journal mostly 1941-1945, a few issues in 1968-7. Printed in Sao Paulo. Ben Street sketched them in, oft w. picture joguara. Mario Moreira Pedericki, Lilly Porter, Willi Kuehli, prominent authors. Dani azageiros "lance joguaro", one seriously wounded. Some use baited trap (armadilha), of log of stick w. drop down (= chiquero). Some hunt w. dogs. Others try "sapera", especially when jog. come to water, night. Saw article by Carlos Lacerda, author of Casas e Caçados, 1950. Reprint of part of T. Roosevelt book in Portuguese, in 1945, Jan-Apr. issues. / Tried to meet Magranni; arrived too late.
27 June 1972. To Museum again. Carvalho there (entomology dept., beetles), having returned from Stockholm meeting (mostly political, he said). Told me. He said he was assembling different data for 1960-70. He said when commercialization in Para was stopped, over 1 million were on hand (including anaconda, caiman, etc.). He thought joguara mostly in deep forests near Amazon, higher ground between lower sites. He thought none far in S. Bahia, former good hunting area, and like do Bonaval, because of ranching development. Probably still can be found in Xingu scale, for Indians do not hunt joguara. He said he would assemble data and allow me to see it. / Fernando B. had invited Alvaro Aguirre to come. Later had collected birds & mammals for museum, had been mentioned also deer. Casa e Pesca; now retired. Had written booklet on fishing & hunting in Mato Grosso, had lived many years in C. Santos near Desc Ruim (former great variety game) and Gooro-topia province (probably still joguara there). He thought S. Bahia never too
