C. Koford 39 Journal 22 June 1972 São Paulo, Brazil reduced trade greatly. | We took him out to zoo. Specimen grounds. A "lim safari" area. 3 cu. entrance fee to zoo - one / million / yr. zone. Lakes w. waterfall. well labeled cages. saw Rhynchon (long-legged but less hyena-like), Pternuma (playful - sits up). Have about 5 black 5 pintado jaguar, 10 oceloti, 10 margays, several gets da mata tigress? (= F. geoffroyi? - some from Manaojó do.). Mostly in vet. + breed- ing compound. One man said black jog. 99% sterile. But they had successful black or spotted & watery, with cubs same color as parents. Unfortunately could not get at original data cards, as "Ladelas" not there; other did not know much, relied on keeper to tell them. | Also had's clouded leopards, several caracal. Group of playful Brachyteler, two red-faced uakaris in fine condition, 2 said had black uakari. | Ocelot - preyed & broodstepper, little space between) w. 07; other pair in cages. | Director, Mario Autui, friendly, but little ext info. Secretary from California. | On oceloti in lake, group of yelubars, ateler, saimiri, logothrix, potti - some w. only 5- 10 yds. water gaps; | Hundreds of white-faced Deaulougymus in lake. | Carlos R. de M. said had rank 25 km. distant - L. Sanyor, - Schwarz, others had visited there. Some Brachyteler. | We returned to central town. 23 June 1972. Friday. Returned by bus to Rio de Janeiro. 24 June 1972. Saturday. A park of about 16 ha. on Av. Vargas having about two, mostly ferine, + lemons, pandas, and 100+ agoutis running free, tame, food fed by people. Few groups - mostly well scattered over area. No small young seen - must good area for deer of reproduction; vid social behavior. Parque da Republica? Went up Circunves by train - fine view of city + broader.
