shin, lost from E. of Brasilia - Brasil in S. Paolo zoo. / Traders take good up river on boats; sell to locals, Lucy Hester. / Boat more steeping jog. shrewd to identify old, prevent sale of recently taken shin. / Main remaining pristine forest area in Amazon are between Rio Negro + Solimoes, to N & E. of Manaus (Rio Branco), above falls a tributary. Good near Marajo. Some spots unexplored, even close to Belen. / INPA - V. thinks Brinkman is only good man; bioclimatologist ?) At camera giant antaters, V. once saw trees large & smaller; I claim then said usually burnt in pairs. / Wildlife goes along lazy Amazon river from mouth of above falls. V. has not due to Mato Grosso in many yrs.; thinks most jobs amazon. / Notice say joga eat stranded fish, caiman, turtle (scoop out ulo breaking shell). Notice snake jog. competitor for turtle eggs (not P. pepperoni, etc.).
V. was 2 mos. on river nr. Medan, + thinks he is somewhat inadvertently in science. (Faked photos). V. also had poor opinion of Rucki writings, tho admitted R. knew much in head. / V.'s last Amazon trip use Dec. - Mar. Plan to go again October. Says, in 1915, E. half of S. Paolo state was "unexplored" in rape. Now Mato Grosso settling fast, many rancher. Museum here has about 10 jog. shin (not seen). Highest priced have strongly marked spots, said V. (older - lower price). / V. said real wealth of Amazon is in mining. Arapoa - while run bought. Rio Jari - to grow cellulose, but probably actually to strip mine it. Military govt. of Brazil does not tolerate disagreement, so advice, not effective, thought V. / He telephoned to friend Carlos Reis de Magalhaes, conservationist nr. wildlife internets, and set up date for me.
