Santa Teresa, Espirito Santo Brazil
Another species 'Severataepis' (sp?), north of Rio Doce near coast, 30,000 ha; cut in 1941, had many jaggs. In late 1950's, still some. Fertile N., mrs. Lorke, reserve "Conego do Verde" had many oreoetes (5000 ha. Area along Bahia - C.S. Lorke, trying to get for preserve, also her joguara - and forests of S. Bakia, especially around Itamaraju + Mts. Passoa. There are other preserves in E.E. Santa, including Ilha de Condeicao where Domodochylops found out (over a ton, says A.R.), a marine biological station near Santa Cruz (envir. in Rio sends students); Pedro Azul, 2500 ha., west of Vitoria; Ferro Grande, 10,000 ha.
5000 ha., w. of Castelo & S., and Rio Bardeira area (2098 m.) of Nat. Park of Caparaos. Large areas have good protection. Most have living facilities. / Rauschi has traveled widely in Brazil, has influential friends & family. He highly recommends legends of Dr. Verdier in Serra de Bodoquena, west of Miranda in part of valley of Mato Grosso. Kui Curry-Leibold visited them about 4 yrs. ago. From plane, they saw joguara carry two cubs to room, one after other. Srq. Fernando, son of Sao Paulo & part owner, a friend of A.R., agreed to have 19 hunters on ranch, communicate by radio, special dogs, 2 planes. Rauschi gave me better introduction. / Rauschi had published about 90 papers, nearly all in his own bulletins. Main on orchids, bats, monkeys, cassowaries, food lists, but mostly on hummingbird biology (largely from obs. repetitious). He sends hundreds of eggs to Charles Silley for egg-white protein analysis. Visited annually by C. Brownwell. / One paper tells of area where animals hunted out, & poops given in area / mammal. He said many meguara in Bahia (sp?) area, Rauschi leader, and that did not shed antlers. Tell many fascinating facts about displays of various hummingbirds. / Had told him of Fernando Antiga C., & A.R. were enthusiastic about getting him to do field work that he could no longer do, especially in Caatinga high country. Paperjatos (?sp.), Ecuador, said to have 40 sp. hummers. / R. said many
